Understanding Intune Autopilot Pre-Provisioning

Autopilot pre-provisioning is a key component of Intune’s IT-prepared device deployment process. However, it can sometimes break, causing issues during the technician phase.

Where It Commonly Breaks

Common failure points include permissions, ESP timeouts, network requirements, and app installations.

Required Permissions

The pre-provisioning technician should have either an Intune Administrator or Cloud Device Administrator role.

ESP Timeout and App Installation Considerations

Configure ESP to skip user-targeted apps during the device phase to avoid timeouts. Ensure that app installations are completed before initiating the pre-provisioning process.

Reseal Failures and Recovery Options

If a reseal fails, collect logs via the technician menu (Shift+F10), then use mdmdiagnosticstool.exe -area Autopilot.

Network Requirements During Technician Phase

Wired Ethernet is strongly recommended over Wi-Fi during pre-provisioning for stability and reliability.

Correct Device Clock

Time-sensitive Autopilot operations require a correct device clock. Verify before troubleshooting further.
