Safely Roll Out Software Updates Across the Organization with SCCM Phased Deployments

As an IT admin or security engineer, managing large-scale deployments for software updates and applications can be a complex task. SCCM Phased Deployments provide a solution to this challenge by offering a controlled approach that ensures your organization’s devices receive updates in a safe and organized manner.

What are SCCM Phased Deployments?

Phased deployments in SCCM allow you to roll out software updates or applications to collections of devices, progressing through predefined phases based on success criteria you set. This gradual deployment approach reduces the risk of issues that could impact your entire organization.

Creating Phased Deployments for Software Updates and Applications

To create a phased deployment, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the Software Library > Software Updates > All Software Updates in the SCCM console.
2. Select the software update group you wish to deploy and click on Deploy.
3. Choose Phased Deployment as the deployment type.

Configuring Phase Success Criteria and Automatic Progression

In phase 1 of a phased deployment, configure a pilot collection to test the software update before rolling it out more broadly. Set success criteria for phase 1, such as a specific number of devices successfully updated or no reported errors. When these criteria are met, SCCM will automatically progress to the next phase.

Pausing and Resuming Phased Deployments

You can pause or resume phased deployments at any time from the Deployment Overview dashboard in the SCCM console. This gives you full control over the deployment process, allowing you to respond to issues as they arise.

Monitoring Phased Deployment Progress in SCCM Console

The Deployment Overview dashboard provides a visual representation of the progress of your phased deployments. Monitor the status of each phase, view error and success rates, and identify any issues that require attention.

With SCCM Phased Deployments, you can ensure your software updates and applications are rolled out safely and effectively across your organization.
