In this blog post, we’ll explore common Azure AD Connect sync error types and causes that may lead to object sync failures to Entra ID, with a focus on identity admins managing hybrid identity environments. Synchronization Service Manager (SSM) will be our primary tool for diagnosing these errors.
Duplicate Attribute Errors
When attributes have duplicate values across synchronized objects, it can cause sync issues. To resolve this, review and update the conflicting attribute values in your on-premises Active Directory (AD).
Invalid Character Errors
Inconsistent character encodings between on-premises AD and Azure AD can result in invalid characters within synchronized objects. To fix this, verify that both directories are using the same encoding format.
Forcing Delta and Full Sync Cycles
Force a delta sync to update recently changed objects, or perform a full sync to address all object sync failures. To do this in SSM, right-click on your synchronization service, select ‘Run Synchronization Now’, and choose either ‘Delta’ or ‘Full’.
Monitoring Sync Health with Entra Connect Health
Entra Connect Health provides insights into the health of your Azure AD Connect sync environment. Regularly review its dashboard to identify any ongoing sync issues.
